Garde (Swedish pronunciation:[ˈɡɑ̂ːɖɛ])[3] orGarda is a populated area, asocken (not to be confused withparish), on the Swedish island ofGotland.[4] It comprises the same area as theadministrative Garde District, established on 1 January 2016.[5] It was the birthplace of the marine biologistAdolf Appellöf (1857).
Garde is the name of the socken as well as the district. It is also the name of the small village surrounding themedievalGarde Church,[6] sometimes referred to asGarde kyrkby. It is situated in the eastern part of Gotland.[7]
One of the largestcairns on Gotland, theDigerrojr (not to be confused with the eponymous cairn inAlskog) or Graips rojr, is in Garda. It is approximately 5 m (16 ft) high and 35 m (115 ft) in diameter. It is surrounded bystanding stones and a rock that is thought to have been used for some kind ofsacrifices.[8]
As of 2019[update], Garde Church belongs to Gardeparish, along with the churches inEtelhem,Alskog,Lye andArdre.[9][10]
One of theasteroids in theasteroid belt,10808 Digerrojr, isnamed after the Digerrojr cairn in Garde.[11]
