Fukutsu (福津市,Fukutsu-shi) is acity located inFukuoka Prefecture,Japan.[1] As of 29 February 2024[update], the city had an estimatedpopulation of 68,834 in 31114 households, and apopulation density of 1300 persons per km2.[2] The total area of the city is 52.76 km2 (20.37 sq mi).
Fukutsu is located in northern Fukuoka Prefecture, approximately midway between Fukuoka City and Kitakyushu City. It is surrounded by Mt. Kohbi, Mt. Motoki, and Mt. Iimori from the east to the south, and theGenkai Sea (Sea of Japan) to the northwest. The coast has been designated as part of theGenkai Quasi-National Park, and is a scenic area.

Fukutsu has ahumid subtropical climate (KöppenCfa) characterized by warm summers and cool winters with light to no snowfall. The average annual temperature in Fukutsu is 15.8 °C. The average annual rainfall is 1599 mm with September as the wettest month.[3]

The area of Fukutsu was part of ancientChikugo Province. During theEdo Period the area was under the control ofFukuoka Domain. After theMeiji restoration, the villages of Jingō and Kami-Saigō were established on May 1, 1889, with the creation of the modern municipalities system. The villages merged to form the town ofFukuma on April 1, 1954. Fukuma merged with the town ofTsuyazaki on January 24, 2005, and became the city of Fukutsu.
Fukutsu has amayor-council form of government with a directly elected mayor and aunicameral city council of 18 members. Fukuma contributes one member to the Fukuoka Prefectural Assembly. In terms of national politics, the city is part of theFukuoka 4th district of thelower house of theDiet of Japan.
Fukutsu has a mixed economy centering on agriculture, commercial fishing and light manufacturing and food processing. An increasing percentage of the working population commutes to nearby Fukuoka or Kitakyushu cites for work, since large-scale public housing developments were built in the 1960s and 1970s.
Fukutsu has seven public elementary schools and three public junior high schools operated by the city government and two public high schools operated by the Fukuoka Prefectural Board of Education.
