Professor of Computational Biology at UCL
François Balloux is the director of the UCL Genetics Institute,[1] and a professor ofcomputational biology atUniversity College London.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Balloux earned a master's degree in 1996 and a doctorate in 2000 from theUniversity of Lausanne. He then completed postdoctoral research at theUniversity of Edinburgh.[2]
Balloux was an assistant professor at theUniversity of Cambridge, between 2002 and 2007, before taking a position as an associate professor in infectious disease epidemiology atImperial College London. In 2012, Balloux became a full professor atUniversity College London.[2]
Balloux's research lies at the interface ofgenomics,epidemiology,evolution andecology. The main focus of his work is on the reconstruction of disease outbreaks and epidemics of human and wildlifepathogens,[3][4][5] and the emergence ofantimicrobial resistance.[6][7][8] He has also engaged in research on the emergence and spread of drug resistance intuberculosis,[9][10] andGram-negative bacteria,[11][12] and the distribution of zoonotic pathogens invertebrates.[13]
Balloux participated in curating a dataset ofSARS-CoV-2 genetic samples early on in the pandemic.[14]
