TheFederative International Programme for Anatomical Terminology (FIPAT) is a group of experts who review, analyze, and discuss the terms of themorphological structures of the human body. It was created by theInternational Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA) and was previously known as theFederative Committee on Anatomical Terminology (FCAT) and theFederative International Committee on Anatomical Terminology (FICAT).
This Committee was created in 1989, at the XIII International Congress of Anatomists, held inRio de Janeiro (Brazil). It followed the oldInternational Anatomical Nomenclature Committee (IANC).
Theprofessionals involved are renownedprofessors andresearchers with knowledge of medical terminology.
They hold periodic meetings in different countries on a rotating basis, where they studymorphological terminology:anatomical,histological andembryology of the human being.
The results of this committee were published in 1998 in theanatomical area and in 2008 in thehistological area. It is currently working in theembryologist area.
The main objective is to study the problem of morphologicalterms and its possible solutions.
The aim is to achieve a commonscientific language that allows international integration, facilitatingscientific exchange and progress in the variousmedical specialties.
This impacts onresearch,teaching andmedical care worldwide.
