Farmsen-Berne is a quarter ofHamburg, Germany, in the borough ofWandsbek. More than 34,000 inhabitants live in an area of 8.3 km2. Farmsen (German pronunciation:[ˈfaʁmzn̩]ⓘ) and Berne (German pronunciation:[ˈbɛʁnə]ⓘ) are part of the area ofWalddörfer (lit.forest villages).[2]
Farmsen-Berne borders the quarters ofRahlstedt,Tonndorf,Wandsbek,Bramfeld,Sasel, andVolksdorf. The stream ofBerner Au flows through Farmsen-Berne and, behind the pond of Kupfermühlenteich, intoWandse river.
In 1296, the former villages of Farmsen and Berne were first mentioned. Farmsen was then calledVermerschen, deriving ofFridumareshusen orFridumaresheim, founded by aFranconian settler named Fridumar. The name Berne has its origin inBaren, meaning a small stream - Berner Au in this case.[3] Farmsen-Berne was anexclave of Hamburg inPrussian territory. In 1937, the villages were incorporated intoHamburg by theGreater Hamburg Act, which came into force in 1938.[2]
