Anexopeptidase inhibitor is adrug thatinhibits one or moreexopeptidaseenzymes. Exopeptidases are one of two types ofproteases (enzymes that break downproteins andpeptides), the other beingendopeptidases. Exopeptidases cleavepeptide bonds of terminalamino acids, resulting in the release of a single amino acid ordipeptide from the peptide chain, whereas endoeptidases break non-terminal bonds (that is, they cut proteins/peptides into two chains).
Some examples of exopeptidase inhibitors includeamastatin, bestatin (ubenimex),puromycin,1,10-phenanthroline,D-phenylalanine,ACE inhibitors,DPP-4 inhibitors, andexogenousMMP inhibitors likebatimastat andmarimastat. Variousenkephalinase inhibitors, such asketalorphan, spinorphin, andtynorphin, are mainly exopeptidase inhibitors.[1]
