Eve Queler (born January 11, 1931)[1][2][3] is an Americanconductor and theemerita Artistic Director of theOpera Orchestra of New York (OONY). She founded the OONY in 1971, after having worked on the staff of theMetropolitan Opera and theNew York City Opera.[2] She is notable for her advocacy for, and conducting of, lesser known and less-frequently performed operas, such asRienzi[2] andJenůfa.[4]
BornEve Rabin in New York City, Queler attendedThe High School of Music & Art, graduating in 1948.[3] She then matriculated in theMannes School of Music, where she studied piano and conducting. AMartha Baird Rockefeller Fund grant enabled her to pursue further studies in conducting withJoseph Rosenstock and accompaniment withPaul Ulanowsky andPaul Berl. She also participated inmaster classes withWalter Susskind andLeonard Slatkin in St. Louis andIgor Markevich andHerbert Blomstedt in Europe.
Although primarily dedicated to the OONY, she has appeared as a guest conductor with numerous opera companies and orchestras internationally, including theMariinsky Theatre,Opera Australia, theHamburg State Opera, theNational Theatre in Prague, theFrankfurt Opera, thePhiladelphia Orchestra, theMontreal Symphony Orchestra, theCleveland Orchestra, theEdmonton Symphony Orchestra, and theHonolulu Symphony Orchestra among others.
Eve Queler is the recipient of a 2010National Endowment for the Arts Opera Honors Award.[5] In 2017, New Amsterdam Opera presented Mo. Queler with its first-ever Pathfinder Award.[1][2]
Her husband was Stanley Queler, a lawyer, who died on January 30, 2013, at age 83.[6]
Eve Rabin Queler was born in 1936 in New York and began piano lessons at the age of five. Her first ambition was to be a concert pianist, and to this end she practiced constantly, gave recitals, and entered competitions.
