Eutropis macularia, bronze grass skink, atPocharam lake,Andhra Pradesh,India.

Eutropis is agenus ofskinks belonging to thesubfamilyMabuyinae. For long, this genus was included in the "wastebin taxon"Mabuya; it contains theAsian mabuyas. They often share theirhabitat with the relatedcommon skinks (Sphenomorphus), but they do not compete significantly as theirecological niches differ.[2] This genus also contains the only member of the subfamily to occur inAustralasia, themany-lined sun skink (Eutropis multifasciata), whose wide range includesNew Guinea.[3]

Description

[edit]

They are mid-sized to largishlizards with cylindrical bodies, tails of medium length, and well-developed arms and legs; the hands and feet have 5 toes each. Theircycloid scales are underlaid byosteoderms; the scales on the back and belly are similar in shape, but those on the back are keeled. The scales on the top of the head are generally flat andsubimbricate; they have a pair ofsupranasal scales and thefrontoparietal andprefrontal scales are paired or fused. The secondsupraocular scale is the hindmost one that contacts thefrontal scale, and the tertiarytemporal scale extends forward to separate the secondary temporal scales. Thenasal scale is undivided.[2]

Eutropis mabuyas have 26presacralvertebrae. Theirpalatine bones are in contact with themedian; the deepsphenopalatine notch separates thepterygoids and extends forwards to between the centre of the eyes. The fairly small teeth arepleurodont, and the pterygopid always bears teeth. Theear opening is small, and theeardrums are hidden in a moderately deepear canal.[2]
