ErinSuzanne[citation needed] Houchin (/ˈhaʊtʃɪn/HOW-chin; néeMount; born September 24, 1976) is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative forIndiana's 9th congressional district since 2023.[1] A member of theRepublican Party, she represented the 47th district in theIndiana Senate from 2014 to 2022.[2]
Houchin was born inIndiana on September 24, 1976, and attendedScottsburg Senior High School.[3] She earned aBachelor of Arts in psychology fromIndiana University Bloomington and aMaster of Arts inpolitical management fromGeorge Washington University.[4][5]
Houchin worked as a field manager for U.S. SenatorDan Coats.[6] She was first elected to the Indiana Senate in 2014, defeating incumbentRichard D. Young.[7] She ran for theUnited States House of Representatives forIndiana's 9th congressional district in2016,[8] losing the Republican primary election toTrey Hollingsworth.[9][10]
On January 13, 2022, a day after Hollingsworth announced he would not run for reelection, Houchin announced that she was running to succeed him in the2022 elections.[11] On January 29, 2022, Houchin announced that she was resigning from the state senate on February 4 to focus on her bid for Congress. She won the Republican primary[12][13] and the November 8 general election.[14]

Following the November 2024 elections, Houchin won the internalHouse Republican Conference elections for secretary (the sixth-highest ranking post in the conference), defeatingMariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa.[17]
In 2023, Houchin voted to halt all U.S. military aid toUkraine, in support of its defense against theRussian invasion.[18][19] The amendment failed on a vote of 358–70, with all Democrats and a majority of Republicans voting no.[18]
Houchin later voted for a ban on a Center of Excellence in Ukraine which enhances NATO activities.[20] That same year, Houchin was among 98 Republicans to vote for a ban on providing U.S.cluster munitions toUkraine.[21][22]
In 2023, Houchin voted for an amendment that would eliminate funding for immigration and refugee assistance.[23]
Houchin opposes same sex marriage.[24]
Erin Houchin has an "F" rating from theNational Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) for her voting history regardingcannabis-related causes.[25]
Houchin's husband, Dustin, is a prosecutor forWashington County, Indiana. They have three children and live inSalem, Indiana, as of 2014[update].[6][26] Dustin ran for a judgeship on the Washington County Superior Court in 2022.[27] Houchin isProtestant and attends Mount Tabor Christian church, aRestorationist church.[28][29]
