British herpetologist (1940–2023)
Edwin Nicholas Arnold (16 October 1940 – 23 September 2023) was a British herpetologist and the Curator ofHerpetology at theNatural History Museum, London. Arnold made seminal contributions to the herpetology of Europe and North Africa, especially ongeckos and lizards of the familyLacertidae. He discovered and described 36 species and 4 subspecies of reptiles,[1] and wroteA Field Guide to the Reptiles and Amphibians of Britain and Europe, which appeared over multiple editions.[2] Arnold died of heart failure on 23 September 2023, at the age of 82.[3][4]
At least four species of reptiles have been named in Arnold's honor:[5][6]
- Arnold's leaf-toed geckoHemidactylus arnoldiLanza, 1978 is a species of lizard in the family Gekkonidae. The species is endemic to Somalia.
