The title ofEarl of Cumberland was created in thePeerage ofEngland in 1525 for the 11thBaron de Clifford.^[1] It became extinct in 1643.^[1] Thedukedom of Cumberland was created the following year.

The subsidiary title of the first three earls wasBaron de Clifford. The last earl was createdBaron Clifford before he became earl, in 1628.^[1]
