Edith Yvonne Jones (born 1960)[1] is a British molecular biologist who is director of theCancer Research UK Receptor Structure Research Group at theUniversity of Oxford[6][7][3][8] and aFellow ofJesus College, Oxford.[9] She is widely known for her research on themolecular biology ofcell surface receptors and signalling complexes.[10][5]
Jones was born in 1960 inOswestry, Shropshire, England.[1] She was educated atLlanfyllin High School in Wales.[1] She earned aBachelor of Arts degree inPhysics from theUniversity of Oxford where she was an undergraduate student ofJesus College, Oxford in 1982.[9] She was awarded aDoctor of Philosophy degree from Oxford in 1985 for structural and dynamic studies of biological macromolecules supervised by Andrew Miller andDavid Chilton Phillips.[4]
Duringpostdoctoral research at theUniversity of Edinburgh Jones performedneutron scattering experiments at theInstitut Laue–Langevin inGrenoble to investigate the properties ofcollagen. She subsequently returned to Oxford to learn proteincrystallography, and determined one of the first structures of acytokine, tumour necrosis factor (TNF) withDavid Stuart.[11] During her research, Jones contributed to theMedical Research Council (MRC)HIV/AIDS programs investigating the structure ofreverse transcriptase for the development ofantiviral drugs.[12] In 1991 Yvonne started her own research laboratory at theUniversity of Oxford funded by aRoyal Society University Research Fellowship (URF) until 2001.[1] In 1999 Yvonne co-founded the Division of Structural Biology (STRUBI) at Oxford. As of 2017[update], she is joint head of STRUBI and Deputy Director of theWellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics.[13][14]
Jones was elected aFellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2017.[7] She was also elected aFellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci) in 2003,[citation needed] awarded theDescartes Prize by theEuropean Union in 2002[citation needed] and awardedEMBO Membership in 2007.[9] She was elected aFellow of the Learned Society of Wales in 2022.[15]
