Diptychus is a genus of freshwaterray-finned fish belonging to thefamilyCyprinidae, the family which includes the carps, barbs and related fishes. This genus is classified within thesubfamilySchizothoracinae,[2] the snow barbels.[3] The two species in this genus are found inHimalaya and theTibetan Plateau of China, India, Nepal and Pakistan, ranging west to theTien Shan Mountains andCentral Asia.[4][5] Thetype species is the scaly osman,Diptychus maculatus. The name is derived from theGreek worddi, meaning "two", and the Greek wordptyx, meaning "fold".Diptychus is up to 70 cm (2.3 ft) in total length.[4]
