Dionysius bar Salibi (died 1171) was aSyriac Orthodox writer and bishop, who served asmetropolitan ofAmid, inUpper Mesopotamia, from 1166 to 1171.[1] He was one of the most prominent and prolific writers within theSyriac Orthodox Church during the twelfth century.[2]

He was a native ofMelitene, on the upperEuphrates. Hisbaptismal name was Jacob. He assumed name 'Dionysius' upon consecration to theepiscopate. In 1154, he was ordainedbishop of Marash by the patriarchAthanasius VII bar Qatra;[3] a year later thediocese of Mabbug was added to his charge.[4] In 1166, new patriarchMichael the Great, the successor of Athanasius, transferred him to the metropolitan see ofAmid in Mesopotamia, and there he remained until his death in 1171.[1][5]

Of his writings probably the most important are his exhaustive commentaries on the text of the Old and New Testaments, in which he skillfully interwove and summarized the interpretations of previous writers such asEphrem the Syrian,Chrysostom,Cyril of Alexandria,Moses Bar-Kepha andJohn of Dara, whom he mentions together in the preface to his commentary onSt Matthew. Among his other main works are a treatise against heretics, containinginter alia a polemic against theJews and theMuslims; liturgical treatises, epistles and homilies.[1]

His polemical works also include treatises onMelkites,[6] andArmenians.[7]
