Dinoponera grandis is aspecies ofant notable for its lack of distinctqueen caste.
In 2021, this species was merged withDinoponera australis.[1]
Dinoponera australis is divided into three subspecies:[2]
Studies have shown thatfat storage in this species is related to thedivision of labour in thecolony and non-reproductive individuals are characterized with a lowerlipid count than reproductives.[3]
Dinoponera australis has been found to exhibit marked differences in the degree ofpolyploidy across its tissues, ranging from 2 to 64 copies of the nuclear genome.[4]
Dinoponera australis has the widest known range of theDinoponera. This species is found in the department ofSanta Cruz inBolivia, southernBrazil in the states ofMato Grosso,Goiás,Minas Gerais,São Paulo,Mato Grosso do Sul,Paraná,Santa Catarina andRio Grande do Sul, easternParaguay in the departments ofItapúa,Alto Paraná andGuairá, as well as the province ofMisiones inArgentina.[5]
