Dingbat

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Typographic symbol class

This article is about the typesetter's ornament. For other uses, seeDingbat (disambiguation).
This article containsUnicode emoticons or emojis. Without properrendering support, you may seequestion marks, boxes, or other symbols instead of the intended characters.
Poem typeset with generous use of decorative dingbats around the edges (1880s). Dingbats are not part of the text.

In typography, adingbat (sometimes more formally known as aprinter's ornament orprinter's character) is anornament, specifically, aglyph used intypesetting, often employed to create box frames (similar tobox-drawing characters), or as adinkus (section divider). Some of the dingbat symbols have been used assignature marks or used inbookbinding to order sections.[citation needed]

In the computer industry, adingbat font orpi font[1] is acomputer font that has symbols and shapes located at thecode points normally designated for alphabetical or numeric characters. This practice was necessitated by the limited number of code points available in 20th centuryoperating systems. Modern computer fonts containing dingbats are based onUnicode encoding, which has unique code points for dingbat glyphs.

Dingbats Unicode block

[edit]
Main article:Dingbats (Unicode block)

Unicode providescode points for many commonly used dingbats, as listed below. Prior to widespread adoption of Unicode in the early 2010s, "dingbat fonts" were created that allocated dingbat glyphs to codepoints in code positions otherwise allocated to "normal" character sets.

Most of its characters were taken fromZapf Dingbats. The block name was changed from "Zapf Dingbats" to "Dingbats" in June 1993, with the release of 1.1.[4][5]
