Dimetacrine (also known asdimethacrine andacripramine; brand namesIstonil,Istonyl,Linostil, andMiroistonil) is atricyclic antidepressant (TCA) used inEurope and formerly inJapan for the treatment ofdepression.[2][3][4][5][6] It hasimipramine-like effects; though, in adouble-blindclinical trial against imipramine, dimetacrine was found to have lower efficacy in comparison and produced moreweight loss and abnormalliver tests.[7][8]

Little is known about thepharmacology of dimetacrine,[9] but it can be inferred that it acts in a similar manner to other TCAs. If this is indeed the case, dimetacrine may induce severe cardiac toxicity in overdose (a side effect unique to the tricyclic class of antidepressants).
