Diego Ramón Jiménez Salazar (bornMadrid, 27 December 1968), known asEl Cigala (Castillan for 'Langoustine'), is aSpanish RomaniFlamenco singer.[1] He also holds Dominican citizenship.[1]
Born into a family ofRomani artists and intellectuals in Madrid, Jiménez started his career singing in flamenco clubs, until he caught the attention of flamenco dancers such asMario Maya andJoaquín Cortés, and with guitaristAntón Jiménez,[2] began touring as part of their companies. By the late 1990s, after collaborating on recordings byCamarón de la Isla,Tomatito,Gerardo Núñez andVicente Amigo, he recorded his debut album "Undebel". He has since recorded a further seven albums, and has won two Grammy awards and five Latin Grammy nominations.[3][4][5]
In 2010, he voicedBuzz Lightyear for the European Spanish dub ofToy Story 3, using anAndalusian accent.[6]
His wife, Amparo Fernández, died in 2015 fromcancer inPunta Cana.[7]
