Sir John Dermot Turing, 12th Baronet (born 26 February 1961)[2] is a Britishsolicitor and author.[3][4][5]

Education

Turing was educated atSherborne School andKing's College, Cambridge. He then undertook aDPhil degree in the genetics of thefruit fly as a postgraduate student ofNew College, Oxford.[1][6]

Career

After his DPhil, Turing moved into the legal profession[2][7] initially as anHM Treasury solicitor. He then worked at the international law firm Clifford Chance, where he was a partner until 2014 and latterly a consultant.[8] He specialized in the financial sector, especially with respect to failed banks,regulation, andrisk management.

In 2012, the centenary year of his uncleAlan Turing's birth, Dermot Turing became a trustee ofBletchley Park, where Alan Turing worked as acryptologist duringWorld War II.[7] In 2015, he wrote a book on Alan Turing,Prof: Alan Turing Decoded,[9] and in 2017 he contributed a chapter toThe Turing Guide.[10] He is a member of the European Post-Trade Forum and a trustee of theTuring Trust. His interests also includecryptanalysis andnaval history.[11]

Dermot Turing has commented on the accuracy of the 2014 filmThe Imitation Game, a dramatization of Alan Turing's life.[12][13][14] In 2018 he publishedX, Y & Z: The Real Story of How Enigma Was Broken.[15]

Awards and Honours

In 2020, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of theOrder of Merit of the Republic of Poland for highlighting the role of thePolish in breaking the Enigma Code.[16] He is a visitingfellow atKellogg College, Oxford.[17]

Family Tree

Turing is the nephew of Alan Turing[11][18] and the 12thBaronet in theTuring baronetcy.[2] He is the son of John Ferrier Turing and Beryl Mary Ada Turing née Hann. In 1986, he married Nicola Jane Simmonds, daughter of Malcolm Douglas Simmonds. In 1987, he succeeded his third cousin as the 12th Turing Baronet. He has two sons: John Malcolm Ferrier, hisheir apparent (born 1988) and James Robert Edward (born 1991)[2]
