Denis Sanders (January 21, 1929 – December 10, 1987) was an American film director, screenwriter and producer who directed the debut performances ofRobert Redford andTom Skerritt in the 1962 filmWar Hunt. He won twoAcademy Awards, the first forBest Short Subject in 1955 forA Time Out of War that had served as his master's degree thesis atUCLA and which he co-scripted with his brotherTerry Sanders;[1] and the second forBest Documentary in 1970 forCzechoslovakia 1968.[2] In 1958, he teamed up again with Terry Sanders to adaptNorman Mailer'sWorld War II novelThe Naked and the Dead.
He was born in New York City, the son of sculptor and designerAltina Schinasi. He died from a heart attack inSan Diego, California, where he was professor and film maker in residence atSan Diego State University. His daughter, Victoria Sanders,[3] is a literary agent and film producer.[4]
