Dendrocopos is a widespreadgenus ofwoodpeckers from Asia, Europe and Northern Africa. The species range from the Philippines to the British Isles.

Taxonomy

[edit]

The genusDendrocopos was introduced in 1816 by the German naturalistCarl Ludwig Koch.[3] The name combines theAncient Greekdendron meaning "tree" withkopos meaning "striking".[4] Thetype species was designated as thegreat spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) by the Scottish ornithologistEdward Hargitt in 1890 in his catalogue of woodpeckers in the collection of theBritish Museum.[5][6]

The genus at one time contained around 25 species. Amolecular phylogenetic analysis of the pied woodpeckers published in 2015 found thatDendrocopos waspolyphyletic. In the rearranged genera the number of species inDendrocopos was reduced to 12 as listed below.[7][8]
