Darren Brown (born 29 April 1969) is anAustralian former professionalrugby league footballer who played for theSouth Sydney Rabbitohs,Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs,Western Suburbs Magpies and thePenrith Panthers. Brown also played forTrafford Borough inEngland and for theSalford City Reds in theSuper League. He spent most of his career as a lock or second rower, but could also play in the backline.

Background

Brown was born inSydney and raised inRedfern, New South Wales. He played his junior football withZetland Magpies,Mascot Jets and Waterloo Waratahs in theSouth Sydney Juniors, as well as the Brighton Seagulls in the St George Juniors.[citation needed]

Rugby league career

Brown began his first-grade career at South Sydney (first grade player #774)[2] in the1989 NSWRL season and had two stints at the club.[3][4][5]

In between his South Sydney stints he played the1990 off season withEnglish clubTrafford Borough[6] and then returned to Australia for the1991 season with Canterbury (first grade player #559),[7] where he featured as a centre andfive-eighth, with a highlight being ahat-trick of tries in a win overEastern Suburbs.[8]

After returning to South Sydney for a further two years,[2] Brown joined Western Suburbs (first grade player #974)[9] in the1994 season and played lock in the first three rounds. He was then sacked by Western Suburbs following his involvement in a brawl outside Canterbury Leagues Club and finished the season with Penrith (first grade player #361).[10][11]

Used as a forward, Brown continued to play for Penrith for another four seasons, which included two finals appearances[12][13] in the1997 Super League season.[10]

From 1999 to 2001 he returned to play in England for theSalford Red Devils (first grade player #965),[14] which he captained.[15]

Personal life

Since retiring from rugby league Brown has worked as areal estate agent[16] and is currently employed as astevedore (wharfie) on thePort Botany waterfront. In 2016 Brown walked 858kilometres from theGold Coast to Sydney with his mates from Rise Foundation Australia to raise awareness forsuicide prevention andmental health issues.[17] In 2019 Brown began co-hostingRabbitohs Radio, a weekly rugby leaguepodcast covering the South Sydney Rabbitohs.[18][19] In the podcast Brown, former teammateSteve Mavin and Grant Chappell examine Rabbitohs teamnews, performances andinterview special guests.[20]
