Cyclopyrrolones are a family ofhypnotic andanxiolyticnonbenzodiazepine drugs with similar pharmacological profiles to thebenzodiazepine derivatives.
Although cyclopyrrolones are chemically unrelated to benzodiazepines, they function via thebenzodiazepine receptor ofneurotransmitterGABA.[1] The best-known cyclopyrrolone derivatives arezopiclone (Imovane) and itsactive single-enantiomer component,eszopiclone (Lunesta), which are used to treatinsomnia, and have a known potential for abuse.
