Cuverville Island orÎle de Cavelier de Cuverville is a dark,rockyisland lying inErrera Channel betweenArctowski Peninsula and the northern part ofRongé Island, off the west coast ofGraham Land inAntarctica. Cuverville Island was discovered by theBelgian Antarctic Expedition (1897–1899) underAdrien de Gerlache, who named it forJules de Cuverville (1834–1912), a vice admiral of theFrench Navy.
The island has been identified as anImportant Bird Area (IBA) byBirdLife International because it supports abreeding colony of about 6500 pairs ofgentoo penguins, the largest for this species on theAntarctic Peninsula. Other birds nesting at the site includesouthern giant petrels andAntarctic shags.[1]
