Acommon room is a type of sharedlounge, most often found inhalls of residence ordormitories, at (for example)universities,colleges,[1]military bases,hospitals,rest homes,hostels, and even minimum-securityprisons.[2] They are generally connected to several private rooms,[citation needed] and may incorporate abathroom. They may also be found insecondary schools andsixth form colleges.[3]
Regular features includecouches,televisions,coffee tables, and other generic loungefurniture for socializing.[2] Depending on its location and purpose of use, a common room may be known by another name. For instance, inmental hospitals, where access is usually restricted to the daytime hours, this type of room is often called a "day room".[2]
In Singapore, the term usually refers to abedroom without attached bathroom in anHDB apartment unit.[4]
