Thegens Cocceia was aplebeian family atancient Rome. Thegens is first mentioned towards the latter end of theRepublic, and is best known as the family to which the emperorNerva belonged.[1]
According to Syme, the Cocceii came fromUmbria.[2]
The Cocceii used thepraenominaMarcus,Lucius,Sextus, andGaius, of whichMarcus was favored by the Cocceii Nervae.[1][3]
The only family of the Cocceii known under the late Republic bore thecognomenNerva. A number of personal cognomina were borne by other members of the gens, includingAuctus, Balbus, Genialis, Justus, Nepos, Nigrinus, Proculus, Rufinus, andVerus.[3]
