Clément-Émile Roques (8 December 1880—4 September 1964) was a FrenchCardinal of theRoman Catholic Church. He served asArchbishop of Rennes from 1940 until his death, and was elevated to thecardinalate in 1946 byPope Pius XII.[1]
Born inGraulhet, Clément-Émile Roques studied at theseminary inAlbi and the Catholic Institute ofToulouse before beingordained to thepriesthood on 2 April 1904. He then served as aprofessor,administrator, theprefect of studies, andsuperior of the seminary of Barral, inCastres, until 1929.
On 15 April 1929 Roques was appointedBishop of Montauban byPope Pius XI. He received hisepiscopal consecration on the following 24 June from Archbishop Pierre-Celestin Cézerac, with ArchbishopJules-Géraud Saliège and Bishop Charles Challiol serving asco-consecrators, in theCathedral of Albi. Roques was later namedArchbishop of Aix on 24 December 1934, andArchbishop ofRennes on 11 May 1940.
Pope Pius XII created himCardinal Priest ofS. Balbina in theconsistory of 18 February 1946. He waspapal legate to the 1947 National Eucharistic Congress inNantes, and to the 1956 Congress in hissee of Rennes. Acardinal elector in the1958 papal conclave, Roques lived only long enough to attend the first two sessions of theSecond Vatican Council from 1962 to 1963, andparticipate in theconclave of 1963 that selectedPope Paul VI. During his tenure as Archbishop, the Cardinal confirmed threemiracles attributed toOur Lady of Lourdes.[2]
Roques died in Rennes aged 83. He is buried in theMetropolitan Cathedral of St. Peter.
