Chondroprotection

Chemical Compound

Achondroprotective compound is a specific compound or chemical that delays progressive joint space narrowing characteristic ofarthritis and improves thebiomechanics ofarticular joints by protectingchondrocytes.[1] These agents perform various functions, such as:

  1. Stimulating chondrocyte synthesis ofcollagen andproteoglycans
  2. Enhancingsynoviocyte production ofhyaluronan
  3. Inhibitingcartilage degradation
  4. Preventingfibrin formation in thevasculature

Chondroprotective agents can include both endogenous and synthetic chemicals. Endogenous molecules includehyaluronic acid,glucosamine, andchondroitin sulfate.
