Charlotte Murphy (born 1988)[1][2] is an Irish actress, best known for her role as Ann Gallagher in theBBC seriesHappy Valley (2014–2023).

Early life

Murphy was born inEnniscorthy, the daughter of hair salon owners Brenda and Pat Murphy. She has five siblings. The family moved toWexford when she was 12 years old.[1] She trained at theGaiety School of Acting from 2006 to 2008.[3]

Career

Murphy has worked across theatre, television and film. She performed the role of Siobhán Delaney in theRTÉ drama seriesLove/Hate, for which she won Best TV Actress at the2013 Irish Film and Television Award,[1] and Best Actress in a Lead Role at the2015 Irish Film and Television Awards. She won a further two IFTA Awards in 2017, for Best Actress in a Supporting Role as Ann Gallagher in theBBC One drama seriesHappy Valley, and in 2018 for Best Actress in a Supporting Role asJessie Eden in the BBC One historical crime drama seriesPeaky Blinders.[4]

She won theIrish Times Irish Theatre Award for her performance ofEliza Doolittle inPygmalion byGeorge Bernard Shaw at theAbbey Theatre.[5] She was nominated for Best Actress in a Play at the2019 WhatsOnStage Awards for her performance as Mairead inThe Lieutenant of Inishmore byMartin McDonagh, directed byMichael Grandage.

Personal life

She is in a relationship with British theatre and film directorSam Yates.[2]
