Caught on a Train is a Britishtelevision play written byStephen Poliakoff and directed byPeter Duffell, based on an overnight train journey across Europe, and following the route of a journey that Poliakoff had himself made fromLondon toVienna.[1] It was first shown, as part of theBBC2 Playhouse series, on 31 October 1980, and was re-shown in 2001 and 2006.[2][3]
The play stars DamePeggy Ashcroft as Frau Messner andMichael Kitchen as Peter, and the main supporting cast features Wendy Raebeck as Lorraine andMichael Sheard as Preston. The soundtrack was written by the jazz composerMike Westbrook.[4]
The play won aBAFTA Television Award and other plaudits in 1980.[5][6]
Having previously been available onVHS, the play was released onDVD byBBC Worldwide in 2004, with anaudio commentary by Poliakoff and the producer,Kenith Trodd.[7]
