TheCatholic Church inGibraltar is part of the worldwideCatholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of thePope inRome. There are an estimated 23,000baptised Catholics in Gibraltar, making up 72 percent of the population.[1]
Gibraltar isa single diocese led by theBishop of Gibraltar and immediately subject to theHoly See. The incumbent, theRight ReverendCarmelo Zammit, who wasappointed Bishop of Gibraltar on 24 June 2016 and receivedepiscopal ordination on 8 September 2016,[2] was installed there on 24 September 2016.[3]
The primary centre of Catholic worship in Gibraltar is theCathedral, but there are also sixchurches and ashrine.
