Carmelo Martínez Salgado (born July 28, 1960) is a Puerto Rican former professionalbaseball player who has been a member of theChicago Cubs organization since 1997.[1] He played all or part of nine seasons inMajor League Baseball, primarily as afirst baseman andoutfielder, from 1983 to 1991. He also played one season in Japan for theOrix BlueWave in1992. He is the cousin ofEdgar Martínez.

Career

On August 22, 1983, Martínez hit ahome run in his very first major league at-bat for the Cubs. The homer came off Cincinnati'sFrank Pastore in the 5th inning atWrigley Field.

On December 7, 1983, Martínez was traded by the Cubs along withCraig Lefferts andFritzie Connally to theSan Diego Padres for pitcherScott Sanderson. He andKevin McReynolds were dubbed theM&M Boys on the1984 San Diego Padres team that reached the firstWorld Series in franchise history.[2][3][4] Martínez had 66 RBI, while McReynolds shared the team lead with 20 home runs.[5]

On July 25, 2008, Martínez was involved in a minor league brawl while serving as interim manager of theChicago Cubs' Single-A affiliatePeoria Chiefs. He approached Donnie Scott, manager of theDayton Dragons, and engaged in a heated discussion before shoving him, resulting in emptied benches.[6]

Martinez is currently the manager of theArizona League Cubs.

Prior to the 2019Caribbean Series, Martínez was named manager of theCangrejeros de Santurce after his predecessorRamón Vázquez quit minutes after winning the LBPRC title.[7]
