TheCarinthian dialect group (koroška narečna skupina,koroščina[1]: 71 ) is a group of closely related dialects ofSlovene, a South Slavic language. The Carinthian dialects are spoken byCarinthian Slovenes in Austria, inSlovenian Carinthia, and in the northwestern parts ofSlovenian Styria along the upperDrava Valley, in the westernmost areas ofUpper Carniola on the border withItaly, and in some villages in theProvince of Udine in Italy.[2]
Among other features, this group is characterized by late denasalization of *ę and *ǫ, a close reflex of longyat and open reflex of shortyat, lengthening of old acute syllables and short neo-acute syllables, and ane-like reflex of the long semivowel andə-like reflex of the short semivowel.[3]
