Cairnbaan (Scottish Gaelic:An Càrn Bàn) is a village situated on theCrinan Canal, inArgyll and Bute, westernScotland.
Cairnbaan is about halfway betweenArdrishaig onLoch Gilp at the canal's eastern end andCrinan on theSound of Jura to the west. Its name, fromScottish Gaelic, means white hill or white cairn.[1] On the hill above the village there arecup and ring marks dating from theIron Age.[2]
The Cairnbaan Hotel was built in about 1800 to cater for canal travellers. It was once atemperance hotel.[1] It has featured in the television seriesThe Tales of Para Handy, based on the novels ofNeil Munro.
