Busturialdea, also namedBusturialde - Urdaibai is acomarca of the province ofBiscay, in theBasque Country,Spain. It is the heir of "Busturia", one of the originalmerindades that used to compose the province ofBiscay – this should not be confused withBusturia, amunicipality located in this region. Busturialdea is a diminished portion of the same original subregion and has two capital cities;Bermeo andGernika-Lumo. It is one of the sevencomarcas that compose the province of Biscay.
Busturia used to be one of themerindades ofBiscay and included a larger territory than the current one of Busturialdea, as it reached the province ofGipuzkoa.
Busturialdea was historically the core of Biscay: the capitals of the province,Bermeo andGernika, were located in it; the village ofMundaka, also belonging to this region, had the privilege of speaking always first in the sessions of its parliament and for some time, the harbour ofBermeo was the main portuary facility, untilBilbao was founded in 1300.
Busturialdea and its lush estuary was also important inprehistory. Particularly significant is its site ofSantimamiñe cave, that yielded a full sequence of human habitation fromNeanderthals to theIron Age, and beautifulMagdalenian cave paintings.
Busturialdea is located at the north of the province ofBiscay, limiting with thecomarcas ofLea-Artibai on the east,Uribe andGreater Bilbao on the west andDurangaldea on the south. TheBay of Biscay limits at north.
Thecomarca is located along theUrdaibai estuary, which has been namedBiosphere Reserve byUNESCO in 1984[1][2]
