TheGazette of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar (Burmese:ပြည်ထောင်စုသမ္မတမြန်မာနိုင်ငံတော်ပြန်တမ်း; formerlyThe Burma Gazette) is the officialgovernment gazette of Burma.The Gazette is published weekly on Fridays, in Burmese.[1] The Gazette contains new legislation text, executive orders and instructions, details of the establishment and recomposition of committees, promotions and postings of gazetted officers and other relevant materials.[1]
The 2008Constitution of Burma stipulates that laws signed by thePresident, enacted by thePyidaungsu Hluttaw, or regional and stateChief Ministers "shall be promulgated by publication in the official gazette." Such laws come into effect the day of such promulgation, unless otherwise stated.
TheBurma Gazette, in its modern form, was introduced by the British, and was used to issue circulars and vernacular acts.[2] TheBritish Burma Gazette was first published on 2 January 1875 and continued through 25 September 1886.[3] Its successor, theBurma Gazette, was published from 2 October 1886 onward.[4]
The Burma Gazette has, throughout its history, been known by various names:
TheNational Library of Myanmar, which serves as thenational archives, possesses the entire run of theBurma Gazette from 1875 to 1925 on microfilms, and from 1957 to 1967 in hard copy.[5] During theJapanese occupation of Burma, theBa Maw regime instituted Burmese as the official language, and required official publications like theBurma Gazette to be published bilingually, in English and Burmese.[6] TheNational Library of Australia houses all issues of theBurma Gazette from 1974 onward.[1]
