TheBrown Jewel is asea stack on theNorth Sea coast of Scotland, north of the village ofMuchalls inAberdeenshire.[1][2]

History

Brown Jewel is situated somewhat to the east of the ancientCausey Mounthtrackway, which route was constructed on high ground to make passable thismedieval passage fromcoastal points south ofStonehaven toAberdeen. This passage connected theRiver Dee crossing (where the presentBridge of Dee is located) viaMuchalls Castle andStonehaven to the south.[3] The route was that taken byWilliam Keith, 7th Earl Marischal and theMarquess of Montrose when they led aCovenanterarmy of approximately 9000 men into abattle of theCivil War in 1639.[4]
