TheBrazilian Army General Staff (Portuguese:Estado-Maior do Exército - EME) is the general management body responsible for the coordination of theBrazilian Army, the land force of theBrazilian Armed Forces.[3][4]
The EME's mission is to study, plan, guide, coordinate, and control at the general management level, the activities of the Army, in accordance with the decisions and guidelines defined by theArmy High Command.[5]
The history of the organization begin in theUnited Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves, when the predecessor body calledCourt Arms Command was created in 1808 by theCount of Linhares and the Minister of War at the time.[1] The organization was renamed asCourt Headquarters in 1824 by the EmperorPedro I of Brazil, after thedeclaration of independence September 1822. The current EME was founded on 24 October 1896, by the law No. 403, sanctioned by then PresidentPrudente de Morais.[1]
The EME is subdivided in six subcommands:[6]
