British philosopher
Bob Hale ,FRSE (1945 – 12 December 2017)[ 3] was a British philosopher, known for his contributions to the development of theneo-Fregean (neo-logicist)philosophy of mathematics in collaboration withCrispin Wright , and for his works inmodality andphilosophy of language .[ 4]
Hale obtained a BPhil in Philosophy in 1967 fromLinacre College ,University of Oxford .[ 5] From 2006 until his death, he was a professor ofphilosophy in the department of philosophy at theUniversity of Sheffield . Prior to that, he taught in theUniversity of Glasgow , theUniversity of St. Andrews and theUniversity of Lancaster .
Hale produced the first published neo-Fregeanconstruction of the real numbers .[ 4] [ 6] In his book (Necessary Beings ), he argues for an essentialist theory of necessity and possibility.[ 6]
