Bob Hale,FRSE (1945 – 12 December 2017)[3] was a British philosopher, known for his contributions to the development of theneo-Fregean (neo-logicist)philosophy of mathematics in collaboration withCrispin Wright, and for his works inmodality andphilosophy of language.[4]

Career

Hale obtained a BPhil in Philosophy in 1967 fromLinacre College,University of Oxford.[5] From 2006 until his death, he was a professor ofphilosophy in the department of philosophy at theUniversity of Sheffield. Prior to that, he taught in theUniversity of Glasgow, theUniversity of St. Andrews and theUniversity of Lancaster.

Hale produced the first published neo-Fregeanconstruction of the real numbers.[4][6] In his book (Necessary Beings), he argues for an essentialist theory of necessity and possibility.[6]
