The formerDiocese of Roskilde (Danish:Roskilde Stift) was adiocese within theRoman-Catholic Church which was established inDenmark some time before 1022. The diocese was dissolved with theReformation of Denmark and replaced by the ProtestantDiocese of Zealand in 1537.[1]
Today, the region once within the Diocese of Roskilde's jurisdiction is part of theRoman Catholic Diocese of Copenhagen. Within theChurch of Denmark, the region formerly within the ancient Diocese of Roskilde is today divided between theDiocese of Copenhagen, the "new"Diocese of Roskilde, and theDiocese of Helsingør.
The episcopal see of the Bishop wasRoskilde Cathedral but from 1167, when BishopAbsalon completed a newbishop'spalace known asAbsalon's Castle on the small island ofSlotsholmen, he resided at the small town ofHavn, which later became the present Danish capitalCopenhagen.[citation needed]
The diocese originally included both the island ofZealand andScania (southernSweden, then part of Denmark), but Scania was disjoined in 1060 and initially divided into the short-livedDiocese of Dalby and theDiocese of Lund, which absorbed the first and became the Metropolitan of (southern) Scandinavia.[citation needed]
