Bhagyashree Patwardhan Dassani[1] (néePatwardhan; born 23 February 1969),[2] knownmononymously asBhagyashree, is an Indian actress. She is known for her roles inHindi language film and television. She is a recipient of aFilmfare Award, in addition to receiving nomination forIndian Television Academy Award.[3]

In addition to acting in films, she has been engaged in various philanthropic activities.[4] Her recent television work includes featuring as a talent judge for dance reality showDID Super Moms. Since 1989, she has been married to Himalaya Dassani, with whom she has one sonAbhimanyu Dassani and one daughter Avantika Dassani.[5]

Early life

Bhagyashree is from theMarathi royal family ofSangli inMaharashtra. She is the granddaughter ofChintamanrao Dhundirao Patwardhan, the last rulingRaja of the princely state ofSangli during theBritish Raj in India.[6] Her father, Vijay Singhrao Madhavrao Patwardhan, is the titularRaja of Sangli.[7] She is the eldest of three daughters, the other two being Madhuvanti and Purnima.[8]

She started her acting career with the 1987 television serialKachchi Dhoop, which was based onLouisa May Alcott'sLittle Women. She was approached to act in the serial byAmol Palekar, a renowned actor-director who offered her the role as the original actress had abandoned the project abruptly.[citation needed]

She made her film debut in the 1989 commercially successful Hindi filmMaine Pyar Kiya, starring alongsideSalman Khan where she played Suman.[9] This remains her most successful and best known film to date, for which she won theFilmfare Award for Best Female Debut.[10][11] After marriage to Himalaya Dassani in 1990, she acted in three films: Peepat'sQaid Main Hai Bulbul,K.C. Bokadia'sTyagi and Mahendra Shah'sPaayal, all opposite her husband in 1992.[12] She also acted withAvinash Wadhawan inGhar Aaya Mera Pardesi in 1993.[13] This was her last Hindi film in the 1990s and she went on to appear in a fewTamil,Kannada andTelugu films. She made herTelugu debut in the filmYuvaratna Rana (1998). She also appeared in episodes of the television seriesCID andKabhie Kabhie.[citation needed]

She returned to Hindi films in the mid-2000s appearing inMaa Santoshi Maa (2003),Humko Deewana Kar Gaye (2006)[14] andRed Alert: The War Within (2010). After a gap of several years, she made her comeback to television with the TV serialLaut Aao Trisha aired onLife OK from 2014 to 2015.[15] In 2019, she appeared in the Kannada filmSeetharama Kalyana. She is set to return to Telugu films with the Telugu remake of the 2014 Hindi film2 States.[16]

In 2021, she appeared in the bilingual releasesThalaivi andRadhe Shyam.[17]

In February 2022, she entered as a contestant inStarPlus'sSmart Jodi with her husband, Himalaya Dasani.[18]

In 2023, she made a cameo appearance inKisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, where she reunited with her first co-star Salman Khan after 34 years. Her husband and son also made cameos alongside her.[19]

Other ventures

In March 2015, Bhagyashree became brand ambassador of the Bhagyashree Scheme, launched by theGovernment of Maharashtra.[20] Bhagyashree Scheme caters to girl child from below poverty line families.[21]

Personal life

Bhagyashree married Himalaya Dasani on 19 January 1989.[22][23][24] They have two children, a son[25] and a daughter.[26] Her son,Abhimanyu Dasani, won theFilmfare Award for Best Male Debut for his performance in the 2019 filmMard Ko Dard Nahi Hota.[27] Her daughter, Avantika Dassani, debuted with the web-seriesMithya.[26]
