Beurre d’Ardenne (French pronunciation:[bœʁdaʁdɛn];lit. 'Butter of Ardenne') is a type ofbutter made in theArdenne ofBelgium fromcow'smilk.
As a traditional product of the area, it received Belgianappellation d'origine byroyal decree in 1984,[1] and received Europeanprotected designation of origin status in 1996.[2]
The areas where it is produced are withinWallonia and include the provinces ofLuxembourg,Namur andLiège.[3]
To qualify, production must take place entirely in those areas, from milking of the cows, through tochurning and, final maturation of the butter,[4] and may be made by churning milk, cream or a mixture of both. The final product must be of at least 82%butterfat andbutyric acid.
