Benedikt (pronounced[bɛnɛˈdiːkt]) is the central settlement in theMunicipality of Benedikt in northeasternSlovenia. Before 1998, it was part of theMunicipality of Lenart. It lies in theSlovene Hills (Slovene:Slovenske gorice). The area is part of the traditional region ofStyria. It is now included in theDrava Statistical Region.[3]
The name of the settlement was changed fromSveti Benedikt v Slovenskih Goricah (Slovene:Sveti Benedikt v Slovenskih goricah; literally, 'Saint Benedict in the Slovene Hills') toBenedikt v Slovenskih Goricah (Benedikt v Slovenskih goricah; literally, 'Benedict in the Slovene Hills') in 1952. The name was changed on the basis of the 1948 Law on Names of Settlements and Designations of Squares, Streets, and Buildings as part of efforts by Slovenia's postwar communist government to remove religious elements from toponyms.[4][5][6] In 2003, it was changed simply toBenedikt.[7]
The localparish church from which the village gets its name is dedicated toSaint Benedict and belongs to theRoman Catholic Archdiocese of Maribor. It is originally aGothic church dating to the second quarter of the 14th century. It was extensively rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries.[8]
