TheBemm River is aperennial river, located in theEast Gippsland region of theAustralian state ofVictoria.
Formed by theconfluence of theErrinundra andCombienbar rivers, the Bemm River rises below near Boulder Flat, northwest of the town ofCann River. The river flows generally south then south by east, through the Bemm River Scenic Reserve and theCape Conran Coastal Park, joined by theGoolengook andMcKenzie rivers and six minortributaries, before reaching itsmouth withBass Strait viaSydenham Inlet in theShire of East Gippsland, near the settlement ofBemm River. The river descends 165 metres (541 ft) over its 58 kilometres (36 mi)course.[2]
Thecatchment area comprises mainly public land, includingErrinundra National Park and theLind National Park. These areas have a broad range of ecosystems including cool and warmtemperate rainforest, ancient weteucalypt forest, coastal heathland and banksia woodland. The Bemm River catchment area is managed by theEast Gippsland Catchment Management Authority.
The name of the river is derived from theAboriginal wordsbinn orbirn of theGunai people, meaning "fish hawk".[1]
