Beaune-la-Rolande (French pronunciation:[bonlaʁɔlɑ̃d]) is acommune in theLoiretdepartment in north-centralFrance.
On 28 November 1870 it was the site of abattle during theFranco-Prussian War, in which French impressionist painterFrédéric Bazille was killed.
DuringWorld War II, it was the site of the NaziBeaune-la-Rolande internment camp, a transit and deportation center for Jews closely associated with thePithiviers internment camp. Eighteen thousand Jews were held at Beaune-la-Rolande; most of them were transported toAuschwitz where they were murdered.[3]
Polish artistZber was imprisoned there from 1941 to 1942,[4] and the composerRalph Erwin died there.
