Basil Khalil is a British-Palestinian filmmaker. Khalil's filmAve Maria was nominated for anAcademy Award for Best Live Action Short Film.[1]

Early life

Khalil was born and raised inNazareth, to aPalestinian father and aBritish mother.[2]

Career

Khalil studied for an MA fromScreen Academy Scotland. Khalil spent several years working in London on TV productions, including on the popularJamie Oliver cookery shows.[2]

In 2015, Khalil directedAve Maria, a 14-minute comic short aboutPalestinian Catholic nuns in a West Bank convent who have an encounter with Israeli settlers. The film premiered in the official selection at theCannes Film Festival 2015 and went on to screen at more than eighty film festivals worldwide. It was nominated for theAcademy Awards in the'Live Action Shorts' category.[1]

His 2022 filmA Gaza Weekend was named the winner of theFIPRESCI Prize at the2022 Toronto International Film Festival.[3]
