Barretos is amunicipality in the northern part of the state ofSão Paulo,Brazil. The city has approximately 122,833 inhabitants (IBGE/2020) and an area of 1566.1 km2.[3] Barretos belongs to theMesoregion of Ribeirão Preto.

History

The city was founded on August 25, 1854. The first chapel was built in 1856, where today lies the "Praça Francisco Barreto". On January 8, 1897, Barretos was officially established as a municipality.[4]

Economy

Thetertiary sector of the city is the most relevant, with 72.09% of the city GDP. Industry is 21.64% of the GDP, and theprimary sector corresponds to 6.28%.[5] The largest Latin American cancer center is based in this city.[6]

Culture

Barretos hosts annually the most famousrodeo festival in the country, theFesta do Peão de Barretos. The city is the seat of theRoman Catholic Diocese of Barretos.

Media

In telecommunications, the city was served byCompanhia Telefônica Brasileira until 1973, when it began to be served byTelecomunicações de São Paulo.[7] In July 1998, this company was acquired by Telefónica, which adopted theVivo brand in 2012.[8]

The company is currently an operator of cell phones, fixed lines, internet (fiber optics/4G) and television (satellite and cable).[8]

The Catholic church in the municipality is part of theRoman Catholic Diocese of Barretos.[16]

Protestant Church

The most diverse evangelical beliefs are present in the city, mainlyPentecostal, including theAssemblies of God in Brazil (the largest evangelical church in the country),[17][18]Christian Congregation in Brazil,[19] among others. These denominations are growing more and more throughout Brazil.
