TheBani Yas (Arabic:بَنُو ياس) is atribalconfederation of Najdi origin[1] in theUnited Arab Emirates.[2] The tribal coalition, consisting of tribes fromDubai toKhor Al Adaid in southeastQatar, was called the Bani Yas Coalition (Arabic:حلف بني ياس).[3] TheAl Nahyan, a branch of theAl Bu Falasah, leads the tribe and is the ruling family ofAbu Dhabi.[3][4] theAl Maktoum, a branch of the Al Bu Falasah, is also a member and is the ruling family ofDubai.[5][6] Al Nahyan and Al Maktoum are the most influential in the UAE federal government, and Abu Dhabi and Dubai have the right to veto any federal legislation. The ruler of Abu Dhabi is customarily elected as the president of the UAE, and the ruler of Dubai is traditionally elected as the vice president and prime minister of the UAE.[7]

History

The Bani Yas had close relations with theDhawahir tribe, which was traditionally at odds with theNa'im and theBani Ka’ab inBuraimi Oasis.[8]

In 1835, members of the Bani Yas settled Khor Al Adaid in southeastern Qatar.[9]

The Bani Yas confederation consisted, at one time or another, of a number of branches,[10] which are:

  3. Al Hemairi/Bani Hemair (بني حمير/الحميري)
  4. Al Qubaisi (القبيسات/القبيسي)
  5. Al Mehairbi (المحيربي)
  6. Al Remeithi (الرميثات/الرميثي)
  7. Al Mashghouni (المشغوني)
  8. Al Hameli/Hawamil (الهوامل/الهاملي)
  9. Al Bu Muhair (آل بو مهير/المهيري)
  10. Al Sudan (السودان/السويدي)
  11. Al Qemzi (القمزان/القمزي)
  12. Al Marar (المرر)
  13. Al Mazrouei (المزاريع/المزروعي )
  14. Al Subousi (السبوسي)
