Notable members of the family include actor and former politicianAmitabh Bachchan, his nephew, Bhuvanesh Tripathi, his wife, actress and Rajya Sabha MPJaya Bachchan; his parents, poetHarivansh Rai Bachchan and social activistTeji Bachchan; their daughter, authorShweta Bachchan Nanda; their son, actorAbhishek Bachchan; and Abhishek's wife, actressAishwarya Rai. In 2007,Time listed Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai on its list of most influential Indians.[1]

The Bachchan family are IndianAwadhiHinduChitraguptavanshi Kayasthas fluent in severalHindustani languages (Awadhi,Hindi,Urdu) as well asPersian.[2] The family also hasPunjabi ethnic roots through patriarch Amitabh's mother Teji Bachchan (née Suri) fromLyallpur (in present-dayPakistan) andBengali ethnic roots through Amitabh's wife, Jaya (née Bhaduri). The Bachchan family also is connected to theMangalore region ofSouth India through Amitabh's daughter-in-lawAishwarya Rai Bachchan who hails from theTulu speakingBunt community.

The family has two houses, Jalsa and Pratiksha, inMumbai and resides in Jalsa.[3]
