Azambuja (Portuguese pronunciation:[ɐzɐ̃ˈbuʒɐ]) is amunicipality in thePortuguese district ofLisbon, in the historical region ofRibatejo (and the sole municipality of within the district that does not belong to the historical province ofEstremadura). The population in 2011 was 21,814,[1] in an area of 262.66 km2.[2] Since 2002, it was integrated into theNUTS III statistical subregion ofLezíria do Tejo.

History

The town is so old that there is no longer any surviving record of when it received theprivileged status embodied in a municipal charter.

In 1963Ford opened an auto-assembly plant in Azambuja.

In 2000 the plant was integrated into the nearby auto-assembly business ofGeneral Motors (Opel).Opel Combo minivans were assembled until the end of 2006 when the plant was closed and production transferred to the manufacturer's plantnearSaragossa (Spain).[3]

The town's current name is derived from the name given to it byMuslims of Iberia, who referred to it as "Azzabuja".[4]

Geography

The municipality is limited to the north byRio Maior, to the northeastSantarém, to the eastCartaxo, to the southeastSalvaterra de Magos, to the southBenavente andVila Franca de Xira and to the west byAlenquer andCadaval.

Its seat is the town (vila) with the same name, which has 6,900 inhabitants and occupies the parish (freguesia) also named Azambuja. The total number of parishes is 7.
